5 Innovative Packaging Design Ideas

The world of retail and ecommerce is extraordinarily competitive. Any opportunity to gain an advantage over a competitor and potentially acquire new business is like gold dust.

The companies that identify these opportunities and actively embrace what’s out there can really advance their business.

When it comes to types of packaging, there’s been some incredibly innovative and creative approaches taken by companies around the world. We’ve picked out some of our favourites here to help get your creative juices flowing.

1 – Close Product Reflection

Fashion brand Lee decided to reflect its product closely with its packaging. The company’s skinny jeans are packaged in bold, sleek packages that are skinny in nature – just like the products themselves.

2 – Penguin Packaging

Norwegian Graphic Designer Mats Ottdal is the man behind a really cool packaging design for Birdy Juice. While not packaging in the sense we tend to mean it at Macfarlane Packaging Online, this really identifiable design can give you an idea of what is possible when creative thinking is introduced to your brand identity. Take a look at this Youtube video to see what we mean.

3 – Moustachioed Paintbrushes

Take a look at this design from Simon Laliberté, a student designer at Université du Québec in Montréal, Canada. With the brush forming a moustache of a cartoon gentleman, this is a great way to add a touch of quirkiness and character to a practical item, and you can certainly picture these flying off the shelves. Unfortunately, however, it was never produced, but again does give a sense of what is possible.

4 – Eco-friendly Lightbulbs

Another student project from New York, US, saw some exciting eco-friendly packaging created for Green Depot. Based on the 3R approach of reduce, remove and recycle, this design minimalises materials and waste and is made with 100% recycled corrugated cardboard.

5 – Personalised Packaging

Each company is different, and one method of packaging we feel is really effective is the personalised approach. This lets you enhance your customer experience and offer something memorable.

You can personalise the tape used around your packaging and say thank you for shopping with you for example. Or create a box that really reflects the brand image.

Loads of companies around the world are taking this approach as it is an effective way of enhancing customer experience.
