What is paper packaging?

Paper packaging is a versatile and popular packaging option for many products. It is made from paper materials, which make it strong and durable enough to protect your product during transit. Additionally, paper packaging can be designed in many ways to make your product stand out on the shelf.

Paper is derived from wood pulp, made from trees. This makes it a renewable material. Paper packaging is also recyclable, can be made from recycled material and can be compostable depending on the finish.

Our paper packaging products are made of high-quality materials, and you can rest assured that we source our paper packaging responsibly. In fact, Macfarlane Packaging is aiming for all our sites to be FSC® certified (FSC® - C149407) by the end of 2025. This will give us the ability to source all paper and timber products from sustainably managed forestry.

Is paper packaging better than plastic?

At Macfarlane Packaging, we believe that you should always make an informed choice about the packaging you use. Especially when it comes to packaging and sustainability.

There is no right answer in the paper vs. plastic packaging debate – as both paper packaging and plastic packaging when designed and used properly, can help you reduce waste and cut CO2 from your supply chain.

Both materials have positives and negatives.  Which material you choose should depend on your sustainability goals. To help you make an informed choice about your packaging, all our catalogue products have been assigned an Environmental Impact Rating (EIR). The EIR for each product shows the material type if it contains recycled content, and if a product can be recycled or reused. Request a copy of our catalogue to learn more

We've also recently launched a new sustainable pacaging specialogue. If you'd like to see the recycled content packaging and plastic-free packaging we offder, click here to download a digital copy.

Is paper packaging eco-friendly?

Yes, when designed and used properly, paper packaging is considered a great form of eco-friendly packaging. It is made from a renewable material that can be recycled. Paper packaging is also biodegradable and compostable. However, there are some exceptions like waxed kraft paper which must be disposed of in a general waste stream.

Can paper packaging be recycled?

Yes, most of the paper packaging can be recycled at kerbside, but you should always check with your local authority. Some paper packaging like tissue paper and coated papers may not be accepted in home collections as not all councils will accept them. If you’re using waxed kraft paper, this can’t be recycled due to the wax coating. For more information about how to recycle common packaging products, click here.
